Sisal Rugs - The Do's and Don'ts

Sisal rugs are woven from natural plant fibers. They are strong, durable and due to their unique advantages, can be a lasting addition to a living room, bedroom, office or hallway. However, moisture and humidity can be very hard on sisal rugs. If a large amount of liquid is introduced to the rug, the rug may actually shrink and distort. Also, the penetrating liquid can result in a large stain. For this reason, a sisal rug should be used in a dry place which is unlikely to be subject to spills.
It is also important to keep this in mind when you clean a sisal rug. Be very careful with the amount of moisture used. If liquid is spilled onto a sisal rug, it needs to be removed immediately. To remove the liquid from a sisal rug, blot the rug with a dry cloth and keep blotting with dry parts until there is no more transfer of liquid to the cloth. Also, make sure not to rub the spill because this can drive the liquid into the fiber. If possible, you may find it helpful to lift the rug up and blot from the underside as well. If a staining liquid such as juice is spilled, clean a sisal rug with one-half white vinegar and one-half water solution. Dip a cloth in the solution, blot the rug and then blot with a dry cloth. You may need to repeat this, but remember to use a small amount of the solution to clean a sisal rug so that the rug does not absorb the liquid.
For dry materials, you can scrape it off with a blunt edge, such as a wooden knife. Finally, the sisal rug should be vacumed regularly to take up accumulated dirt. If you vacuum a sisal on a frequent basis, you will also prolong the life of the rug, since embedded dirt tends to damage its fibers.

  1. I like this article, it is so comprehensive about the sisal rug cleaning methods. Because my work is related carpet cleaning I know that you can find helpful my advices. Use a regular household baking soda and sprinkle the carpet to sit over night, and in the next day you vacuum it. Soda is helping the dirt and the soil on the carpet to quickly be removed

  3. Nicolas, your advice is good, but I do not think that baking soda will work on sisal rugs. I think that it will be better to call a professional carpet cleaner when you stain a sisal rug. Professionals know how to treat all kinds of carpets without ruining them

  4. In the process of moving, our rolled up sisal rug got caught in a rain storm for a few minutes. The "top" of the rolled up rug got wet. When we unrolled the it, we saw that one end of it was wet (about 2 feet) and another smaller area was wet further in. The rug is really more damp than wet. Should we let it air dry on its own? Use a hair dryer? I'm afraid the latter will do damage. We can't move our furniture into our living room until the rug is down first, and wish to speed up drying if possible. Thanks!

  5. Hans,
Sorry for the late reply. The faster you can dry something in the carpet and upholstery cleaning world the better it is. If this happens again, a fan or hair dryer (on low temperature setting) will expedite the drying process.

  7. Sisal rugs are made from natural fibers derived from the 'agave sisalana' cactus plant that is grown in the semi-arid regions of Brazil and Africa. The plants are known for their toughness and durability, to the extent that the commercial production of Tanzanian sisals have survived every drought in over a century. The fibers are harvested by hand from the leaves of the plant and can grow up to three feet long. Each leaf contains about 1,000 fibers which are processed (crushed, beaten, washed, dried, brushed and baled) to make rugs and the remainder of the plant is used to produce electricity to sustain the local economies of the grower countries. Not only are sisal rugs extremely durable, they also pose several environmental benefits; they are harvested in a sustainable manner and are renewable as well as biodegradable Sisal rugs are generally very refined looking and are available in a variety of colors. Although they are not as soft as silk, they are very comfortable to walk on as the fibers don't stab you and leave bits of sisal rugs in your skin. Sisal is different from coir, hemp grass and jute; it is much stronger and hence durable than most natural fibers. Its strength makes it perfect for making plaster reinforcements, dartboards, ropes and twine for marine and bailing purposes. Sisal's textured look makes it a favorite among interior designers across the world. These qualities of sisal also make it a preferred material for rugs and carpets. Because of their tough construct and inherent durability, sisal rugs are ideal for in home use and are recommended for high-traffic areas and commercial use. Most sisal rugs have a layer of latex applied to their backsides which helps keep the integrity of the rug's weave and makes them extra durable, thus prolonging their life. There are also several protective products for coating sisal rugs to resist liquid spills, repel water and retard soiling. Machine woven, natural fibers such as sisal, sisal wool, wall-to-wall carpets, mountain grass, jute area rugs and sea grass rugs have non-toxic and anti-static properties which make them an excellent choice for light-commercial and residential use. The natural fibers create healthy indoor humidity levels, prevent the buildup of static and do not have any off-gassing fumes that can cause irritation to the eyes or throat. It must be kept in mind that sisal rugs must not be placed in areas where there are chances of exposure to direct moisture. jute rugs This is because moisture can cause the rug to become water stained and wavy over time.

  10. Leather stains easily and it is extremely crucial to clean the spills at once whenever you see them. For a dark colored stain, rub the stain with a paste made from cream of tartar and lemon juice and leave it on for 10 minutes. Repeat the procedure and finally wipe the paste off with a wet sponge. To get rid of any grease stain, simply sprinkle baking soda on the affected area. Dust the soda off after a few hours.

  12. Agitation helps to remove dirt it is true, but vacuums with no obvious way of agitating the carpet can be used as well and manipulated by the operator to agitate the fibers (whipping the nozzle to use the suction grab and release to yank dirt out of the pile). Carpet Cleaning Gold Coast
